What's hidden behind the avoidance of planning, or how planning helps you meet your real self

Updated: Apr 2

I do coaching in the topic of planning for the past 10 years, and if you only knew how often I hear the neglectful:

“Who cares? How can you plan anything when there are wars, emigration, endless obstacles and frustrations? How can you forecast any of that?”

I definitely agree with one thing: you can't envision everything.

But if you are disappointed in planning, and life has messed you up and your plans, it says nothing but one thing - you are a human being who is not fully aware of what it really means to plan.

And that's what today is all about. Let's dive right in.

Planning is not about lists of tasks for the day, month or year.

Or rather, it's not just about task lists.

Writing out everything you want to do is the first, most basic way to understand planning. We map out things to do, places to go, people to meet - all the things that fill the time of life.

The second level is to plan based on goals.

When a person knows what they want and takes action in their direction. Then the days are filled not just with things to do, but with actions-steps. If you take one step, you're one step closer to your goal. Take 10 and you are 10 closer to your target.

The next way to plan is based on vision.

This is when the focus is not on your daily activities or even your goals, but on the direction of your movement. A trajectory. Kind of “I heard that America is over there, and it's good, so I'm paddling that way. But what America is, what to be paddling on, what this mystical “good” will mean, and why you need it - we'll figure it out on the spot”.

You can also plan from your values.

This is also about to-do lists and direction. But the main thing in this method is to understand what is important to you, and to start from that.

What is important to me is freedom and the process of learning about the world and myself. In what country, on what continent - it is not the most important. The key is to pursue these values. Even in war, in crisis, in emigration and overcoming life's challenges, my plan is to keep these values going.

And the highest pilotage, of course, is to maneuver in all these ways at the same time. When both floors and thoughts are clean. When it's understandable where to row and why.

In a broad sense, for me, to plan means to be ready to face one's inadequacy, arrogance, stupidity, laziness. Sometimes, of course, you can pleasantly surprise yourself, but mostly planning is looking at yourself naked, without filters.

Why is that difficult?

Because you're going to have to take responsibility for what you can change. You have to accept that you're not all-powerful, you're not the center of the universe, and your circle of influence is very limited. But to look in this mirror, you have to stop hiding behind illusions, alcohol, TV shows, swipes, dates, work, relocation and travel..what only mankind has not invented, just to avoid meeting itself.

Because when you meet your true self, when you look yourself honestly in the eyes, it is impossible not to be horrified. This, by the way, is a good indicator: if you are not dismayed, it means that you have not taken off your glasses.

It's impossible not to spring into action. Sleep till noon and drink till you can't function. A sober look at yourself is nuclear power. But that's what scares people who refuse to plan.

Replace the word “plan” with “choose.” Wouldn't that make more sense?

To choose how to think, where to live, what to do, where to go, what mood to have, what people to be with...

Not choosing means going through life with your eyes closed and ears plugged, screaming in fear.

“Ai-yi-yi-yi-yi, how scary. Oh, oh, oh, oh, how poor and miserable I am.”

Open your eyes!

If you're gonna walk on the edge, at least choose which edge to walk on.

Or maybe you'll remember that you can choose a different path.
